Living with hearing loss, tinnitus & a debilitating sound hypersensitivity called Hyperacusis, means that certain instruments cause me a great deal of pain. How could I, as the composer, be sure that the orchestration of my own work enabled me to be included in the process? It was this question that led to a partnership application with Disability Arts Cymru for Create funding to Tŷ Cerdd, the Music Centre for Wales based at the Millennium Centre, Cardiff, whereby I would collaborate with orchestrator Lloyd Coleman to research & develop a strategy that enabled me to create a Music Map of instruments that were compatible to my hearing needs & in so doing, offer these as a methodology that might help others with similar conditions.
