Cheryl's collaborative project with Ruth Fabby MBE, 'Breathing on Borrowed Time' has been selected to exhibit at Temple University's Institute of Disabilities, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. The piece was commissioned by Fran Flaherty, the Founder of Dyer Arts Centre & Assistant Professor at Carlo University in Pittsburgh, and was also supported by Wales Arts International, The Wetlands Trust, Llanelli & Fusion Carmarthenshire. Natur am Byth : Associate Artist Commission
Secretive Species Light & Sound. June 2024 -March 2025
Based in Swansea with Adder Action at Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (ARC), Buglife, and The Bat Conservation Trust, Cheryl is exploring secretive species living on the edge, between and within urban and rural/natural landscapes and what this means for these species, their multi-taxa habitats and the communities live alongside them. The aim of the artist residency is a re-thinking of the way we see species. Nature has an amazing, well-documented ability to help us to heal and lift our feelings of physical and mental well-being. Cheryl will work with the community to tell the fascinating stories of our most vulnerable species through Sound & Light.
Cân y Coed Rainforest Symphony Inclusive Orchestration April - January 2025
Cheryl has been selected by the Arts Council of Wales for a Creative Steps Professional Development Award to pursue her vision of orchestrating Cân y Coed for a bass recorder Quintet by devising inclusive methods that take account of her hearing loss, tinnitus & hyperacusis. For 8 months, she is working with 2 professional recorder mentors and a Quintet of musicians based at Ffwrnes Fach, Ffwrnes Theatre with People Speak Up. Future Wales Fellowship : SONIC NATURE Jan 2024 - April 2025
Cheryl has been selected as one of 8 artists for the Future Wales Fellowship. Her research title is 'SONIC NATURE : Sensing the Garden of Wales - the fellowship is an opportunity for Cheryl to delve into her creative practice & explore ways of deepening emotional connection to nature through repurposing technology associated with hearing loss. Cheryl will be Resident Artist at The National Botanic Garden of Wales for her creative enquiry. In addition, she will be attending 3 Fellowship residentials throughout the year at National Trust Stackpole & Elan Valley. The Fellowship is a partnership between Arts Council of Wales, Natural Resoures Wales, National Trust & the Elan Valley Trust, delivered by Peak Cymru. For full details, click the link below.

Researcher Artist in Residence 2024 - 2025
Cheryl is officially the Researcher Artist in Residence at the National Botanic Garden of Wales for 2024 - 2025. The Garden is Cheryl's base for her research with regard to the Future Wales Fellowship (see above). The Future Wales Fellowship brings together 8 artists from across Wales to look closely at our relationship with nature and how we might deepen connections. St. David Award Finalist Ceremony Senedd Cymru - 22nd February 2024
Cheryl attended the official announcement at the Senedd by First Minister, Mark Drakeford, of the Finalists for the St.David Awards 2024 - they are the highest accolades awarded by Welsh Government & out of the many 100's of nominees, Cheryl has been shortlisted as a finalist for her contribution to Wales nationally & internationally in the Culture category for her work raising awareness of fragile ecologies with Cân y Coed Rainforest Symphony.

Filming at Llanelly House with Like an Egg Productions - 14th February 2024
Like an Egg Productions were commissioned by the Welsh Government to make a film with Cheryl about her work both nationally and internationally. She was joined at Llanelly House by Suzanne Samuel from Fusion. Carmarthenshire. Filming then continued outdoors in nature, at The Wetlands Llanelli, where the crew captured Cheryl recording the biorhythms from beneath the bark of trees. The film will be shown as part of the Official St.David Awards showcase in April at the Welsh College of Music & Drama.

Cheryl is honoured to be exhibiting a collaboration during 2024 with Ruth Fabby Mbe, Breathing on Borrowed Time @ Dyer Arts Centre, New York, Rocester University & the US National Technical Institute for the Deaf, the world's first & largest technological college for deaf & hard of hearing students. Sound Memories RadioSound Memories is a Dementia Friendly Online Radio Station archiving local Life Stories, Nature Narratives, Sound Walks, as well as linking Care Homes to Social Media content to engage older people with the environment. It began as research for Cheryl's Masters Degree 12 years ago and has grown into her heart project. As well as running the website, Cheryl manages a 'Friends of Sound Memories' Facebook Page to connect those interested. She contributes to National research on dementia and help students with thier thesis questions, as well as giving talks on creativity and memory.
Cheryl works with an applied Empowerment Model that she devised as part of her Masters Degree to create work with older people - the model was published in a co-paper with Nick Andrews for International Storytelling for Health. She is honoured to have received a GOLD National Care Award for the work, as well as an Excellence in Digital Media Award. To visit the radio station, follow the link. |
